EU’s Third Largest Suspension Bridge Inaugurated in Romania
Location: Brăila, Romania
Credit: European Union, Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 8 July 2023, shows the newly commissioned Brăila Bridge in Romania. At nearly 2 km in length, it is the third longest suspension bridge in Europe. It will reduce travel times, vehicle operating costs, exposure of residents to air and noise pollutants, and improve the quality of life along the access routes to Danube crossing points in Brăila and Galati. The construction of this bridge was funded by the EU with €363 million from Cohesion Policy funds.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites provide free and open data, useful for a wide range of applications, including detailed land use mapping which is crucial for sustainable urban development.
