Luxembourg City: a capital shaped by valleys

Luxembourg City, the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perched above the deeply incised valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers.

On 29 December 2025, one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites acquired this image of Luxembourg City. Urban areas appear in grey tones, while winter vegetation and farmland form a mosaic of greens and browns across the rolling landscape.

Today, Luxembourg hosts the GOVSATCOM Conference, where the European Commission will participate and organise several side events to showcase how the EU is benefiting from this initiative. GOVSATCOM is the Governmental Satellite Communications initiative part of the EU Space Programme. It has recently started operations to provide reliable, secure, and cost-effective satellite communications services for EU and national public authorities.
