A new study suggests that coastal historical sites in Greece are at risk of being submerged by the end of the century due to rising sea levels driven by global warming. The researchers created flood risk maps based on local and global predictions to assess 464 historical sites along the Eastern Mediterranean coast, finding that 147 of these sites face some level of risk within the next 50 years.

The Greek island of Delos, visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 5 January 2024, has already been affected by structural damage from the rising sea.

The Copernicus Sentinel satellites play a key role in monitoring cultural heritage sites globally. They deliver valuable data for land use and change assessments, ground motion detection, and coastline erosion monitoring, all of which provide essential insights for better protecting these important sites.
