Kelimutu’s coloured crater lakes stand out on Flores Island, Indonesia
Kelimutu volcano, on Flores Island in Indonesia, is known for its three summit crater lakes, each characterised by distinct colours as a result of volcanic activity. The lakes are situated within Kelimutu National Park, a protected area recognised for its ecological and cultural importance.
In this image, acquired on 2 October 2025 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, the three lakes Tiwu Ata Mbupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai, and Tiwu Ata Polo are visible. Tiwu Ata Mbupu appears grey, while the others show bright turquoise hues. The sharply defined crater rims and pale volcanic surfaces contrast with the vegetated slopes surrounding the volcano's summit.
Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery supports the monitoring of volcanic environments, helping to observe surface changes, lake colour variations, and broader environmental dynamics in areas which are otherwise difficult to access.
