Spring awakening in Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is spread across an archipelago where land and water interlace between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. Surrounded by forests, wetlands, and thousands of islands, the region hosts rich ecosystems which support diverse birdlife, coastal habitats, and extensive boreal woodlands.
In March, as spring begins, the ice and snow begin to retreat, and ecosystems gradually reawaken. In this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 8 March 2026, the transition from winter to spring becomes clearly visible. The waters around Stockholm show a mosaic of colours linked to melting sea ice. Dark blue areas indicate open water where the ice has already melted, while lighter bluish tones reveal zones still partially covered by thin ice. Across the surrounding landscape, bright green patches highlight the forests which dominate the region around the Swedish capital.
Copernicus satellite data help track changes in and around cities, supporting urban planning, water management, food security, and the monitoring of climate-related environmental shifts.
