The agricultural mosaic of the Paris suburbs
The Île-de-France region in northern France is one of the country’s most productive agricultural areas and is characterised by extensive arable land. Large fields dominate the landscape, where wheat, barley, maize, rapeseed, and sugar beet are cultivated in rotation as part of established farming systems.
Paris lies at the centre of the Île-de-France region. In this data visualisation, produced using the High Resolution Layer Croplands - Crop Type 2023 product from the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service, the city is shown surrounded by a mosaic of parcels, each corresponding to a specific crop type.
Each year, Paris hosts the Salon International de l’Agriculture, one of the world’s largest international agricultural fairs. The 2026 edition of the event runs from 21 February to 1 March.
Copernicus data enable detailed monitoring of crop distribution, supporting agricultural statistics and evidence-based policymaking under European Union agricultural and environmental frameworks.
