A green milestone for Germany
In 2024, renewable energies made up 59 percent of Germany’s total electricity generation, up from 56 percent in 2023. For the first time, wind and solar overtook fossil fuels as energy sources, thanks in large part to renewable energy deployment policies, including more accessible wind permits and an increase in solar energy installations. German authorities report that in 2024, there was more than a 10 percent drop in fossil fuel energy sources. Onshore wind contributed over 25 percent to the country’s electricity generation, while solar energy recorded the largest growth.

Copernicus provides quality-assured data tailored to the energy sector’s needs. For example, the Copernicus Climate Change Service delivers input (wind, solar and hydro) and energy forecasts (capacity factors, demand, volatility) at the regional and national scale in Europe.
