The Jungfrau-Aletsch region of the Swiss Alps
A recent analysis of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites threatened by climate change suggests that 17 of the 50 most at-risk sites are located on European territory. While flooding and drought were the leading potential hazards to the landmarks, coastal erosion, landslides, extreme temperatures, and storms could also pose threats to these culturally or naturally impressive sites.
One of the Sites analysed in the study is the Jungfrau-Aletsch region of the Swiss Alps, visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 23 August 2024. Home to Europe’s largest glacier, the region comes 11th on the list of the most threatened sites due to its vulnerability to river floods.
The data delivered by the Copernicus Sentinel satellites enables reliable monitoring of glaciers around the world, including changes in size, ice thickness, and movement.
