Mapping Dublin’s Urban Fabric on World Cities Day
On World Cities Day, 31 October 2025, we spotlight Dublin, Ireland’s capital and a hub of cultural, economic, and social activity.
Rapid urban expansion in some European cities such as Dublin brings mounting pressures on infrastructure, housing, mobility, and the environment. Managing these dynamics requires precise and up-to-date spatial information.
This image, produced using the Urban Atlas 2018 dataset from the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service, displays Dublin's urban landscape with high thematic accuracy. From dense residential areas (deep red) and industrial zones (purple) to parks, forests, and coastal features (greens and blues), the map illustrates the diverse land use patterns shaping the city’s development. Key elements such as transport infrastructure, mixed-use zones, and natural areas are also clearly identifiable.
Copernicus supports sustainable urban planning by delivering harmonised, high-resolution land use data. This helps local authorities monitor urban sprawl, preserve green spaces, and plan infrastructure with resilience and inclusivity in mind.
