The Doñana National Park in southern Spain is the largest ecological reserve in Europe. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it encompasses various biotopes such as lagoons, marshlands, and dunes. The park, which is home to diverse flora and fauna, is the annual wintering site for numerous species of waterfowl. In recent years, the Doñana National Park has been severely affected by drought; however, rainfall since the beginning of this year its water bodies have considerably replenished, filling lagoons and marshes with water and allowing vegetation to flourish.

These Copernicus Sentinel-2 images from 2023 and 2024 show a comparison of the amount of water in the lagoons and marshes of Doñana National Park.

Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites provides key insights for monitoring important ecosystems around the world, including during periods of drought.
