Lake Vättern: a freshwater lake at the heart of Sweden
Location: Sweden

Observed annually on 22 March, World Water Day highlights the importance of protecting freshwater resources worldwide. In Europe, freshwater ecosystems are closely monitored and managed. Among these, Lake Vättern is the second-largest lake in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s most significant freshwater bodies. Known for its exceptionally clear water, Vättern supports aquatic ecosystems and provides drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 false-colour image, acquired on 6 March 2026, shows forested vegetation in bright red, while agricultural land appears in lighter tones of pink and brown. The lake is visible in shades of black and dark blue, while frozen water appears in light blue.

Copernicus satellite data support the tracking of water quality, shoreline change, land use, and seasonal environmental pressures, enabling improved freshwater management and long-term ecosystem protection.
