Earth Observation provides us the tools we need to better understand and monitor our planet. This information can be used to make better decisions on the ground, from how to respond to wildfires to how to reduce air pollution in our cities.

Earth Observation in a nutshell

Earth Observation (EO) is the use of remote sensing technologies, primarily satellite-based systems, complemented by ground-based (in-situ) sensors and monitoring stations, to gather, process and analyse data about the Earth’s land, rivers and lakes, marine environment and atmosphere. By integrating these diverse data sources, EO enables us to map current Earth and environment conditions, forecast near-term trends and take informed action—whether for tracking human land use, assessing disaster risks, or supporting a wide range of applications across industries.

Through satellite-mounted payloads, EO captures high-resolution imaging and other critical measurements, transforming raw data into actionable insights for decision-making.

Copernicus generates over 15 terabytes of data daily. The vast majority of data/information delivered by Copernicus is made available and accessible to any citizen, and any organisation around the world on a free, full, and open basis.
