The arctic wetlands of the Teshekpuk Lake, Alaska, USA
The Teshekpuk Lake Special Area, situated on Alaska’s North Slope, is one of the most ecologically important Arctic wetland systems in North America. Recognised for its high conservation value, the area encompasses extensive tundra landscapes shaped by permafrost, shallow lakes, and wetlands. These habitats are important for migratory birds, including substantial populations of waterfowl, and serve as calving grounds for the Teshekpuk caribou herd.
This data visualisation shows Teshekpuk Lake and its surrounding area, using the Copernicus Global Land Cover 2020 product (CGLC) from the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service. Permanent water bodies are shown in dark blue, herbaceous wetlands and grasslands in green, and widespread areas of moss and lichen in yellow.
The CGLC provides global land cover data for 11 classes at 10-metre resolution for the year 2020. More information is available here.
