In southern Mexico, over 70 active wildfires are ablaze, while over 14,000 hectares of forest have already been burnt. This time of year is known as Mexico’s fire season, and is characterised by warm and dry conditions that can fuel wildfires. Areas with substantial forest cover are especially vulnerable to wildfires. Human activities, such as agricultural practices or accidental fires, may sometimes contribute to the ignition of the fires.

An ongoing blaze near Cintalapa is visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 30 March.

Copernicus satellite data provides important information for fire prevention and preparedness, supporting the development of early warning systems, fire risk assessments, and damage assessments.
