Wildfires break out in Doñana National Park, Spain
Two wildfires broke out between 24 and 25 May 2026 within Doñana National Park in south-western Spain, one of Europe’s most important wetland and dune ecosystems, protected under UNESCO World Heritage and Ramsar Convention designations. Andalusian authorities deployed more than 100 forest firefighters, together with aerial firefighting aircraft, to contain the flames within the protected area.
Despite partial cloud cover, this image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 25 May 2026, shows the ongoing fires inside the park. Areas of active fire appear as bright orange-red patches, while a dark brown burn scar marks ground already affected by the flames.
Copernicus Sentinel-2 data help map burnt areas, monitor smoke-affected zones, and support authorities in assessing the impact of fire on sensitive habitats.
