Lake Wörthersee frames Austria’s Alpine lake basin
Lake Wörthersee lies in the Klagenfurt Basin of Carinthia, southern Austria, between low wooded ridges shaped by Alpine geology and glacial processes. The lake and its surrounding settlements bring together freshwater habitats, farmland, transport infrastructure, and tourist facilities within a relatively compact area.
In this image, acquired on 24 May 2026 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites, Lake Wörthersee appears as a dark-blue east–west water body, with lighter turquoise tones along parts of the shore. Klagenfurt is clearly visible to the east as a dense, pale urban area, while villages, roads, and fields trace the lake margins. To the south, the Drava River traces a broad, dark meander through agricultural land.
Copernicus Sentinel-2 data support the monitoring of changes in vegetation, shoreline conditions, water colour, and land use, contributing to environmental management across water bodies and cities.
