Covering 207 square kilometres and reaching thicknesses of nearly 400 metres, Folgefonna is the third-largest glacier on mainland Norway. For nearly two centuries, this striking natural landmark has drawn tourists to the region for activities such as hiking and skiing. However, due to ongoing ice thinning, researchers estimate that the glacier’s northern section will disappear within this century.

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image from 27 September 2025 shows the striking presence of Folgefonna within the Norwegian landscape, with the town of Odda situated nearby.

Thanks to its high temporal and spatial resolution, the free and open data from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites improves efforts to track glacial changes around the world, informing decision-making strategies for climate-related challenges.
