Hornindalsvatnet, located in western Norway, holds the title of Europe’s deepest lake, reaching a depth of 514 metres. Unlike many other Norwegian lakes, it is not fed by glacial rivers, therefore resulting in exceptionally clear water. The lake is located within a spectacular landscape of steep valleys and rugged mountains, making it a significant natural landmark.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 25 May 2024, showcases the elongated shape of Hornindalsvatnet, stretching between the villages of Grodås and Mogrenda.

Copernicus provides free and open data useful for monitoring water quality, seasonal changes, and environmental conditions in remote freshwater ecosystems.
