January 2026, the fifth warmest January on record
The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) has published its latest monthly Climate Bulletin, focusing on key climate trends in January 2026.
The bulletin reports that January 2026 was the fifth-warmest January globally, with an average surface air temperature of 12.95 °C, which is 1.47 °C warmer than the estimated pre-industrial level (1850–1900).
This data visualisation, produced using C3S data, shows surface air temperature anomalies across the Northern Hemisphere for January 2026. Warmer-than-average conditions are visible across large parts of the Arctic, including Greenland and the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, with anomalies locally exceeding +7 °C. In contrast, colder-than-average conditions prevailed over northern and eastern Europe, linked to severe cold outbreaks which affected the area during the second half of the month.
