Snowfall leads to disruptions in the Netherlands
In early January 2026, heavy snowfall and icy conditions affected large parts of the Netherlands, triggering a severe weather alert in several provinces. The widespread snow cover led to major disruptions, including long traffic tailbacks, hazardous road conditions, and hundreds of cancelled or delayed flights at Schiphol Airport. Rail services were also affected, as snow-covered tracks caused delays and train cancellations on key routes connecting Utrecht with Amsterdam and other major cities.
Utrecht, one of the Netherlands’ main urban and transport hubs, is visible under a blanket of snow in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 4 January 2026.
Copernicus data supports the monitoring of snow cover and winter hazards, helping authorities assess impacts on infrastructure and improve preparedness for extreme weather events.
