Sørvágsvatn, visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 4 September 2024, is the largest lake on the Faroe Islands. Located near the village of Sørvágur on the island of Vágar, the lake covers approximately 3.4 square kilometres.

From a particular viewpoint, the cliff near the lake's edge creates the illusion that Sørvágsvatn is suspended several hundred metres above the sea, therefore earning it the nickname "the lake above the ocean". In reality, the lake is only about 30 metres above sea level, with its waters flowing into the ocean through the Bøsdalafossur waterfall. This visual trick is a popular draw for tourists and photographers.

The Copernicus Sentinel satellites provide detailed land cover maps which help detect signs of soil erosion or habitat loss. This data can guide sustainable tourism and conservation measures.
