The southern tip of South America as seen from space
Location: South America
Credit: European Union, Copernicus Sentinel-3 imagery

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites on 27 October 2025, provides a rare, cloudless view of the southernmost regions of South America, including parts of Argentina and Chile.

The image shows the snow-capped Andes stretching along the western edge of the continent, contrasting sharply with the arid Patagonian plateau to the east. The turquoise coastal waters, together with the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and its many glaciers and lakes, showcase the region’s remarkable climatic and ecological diversity.

The free and open data delivered by the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites supports the monitoring of land use, water resources, extreme weather events, and drought, enabling the consistent and reliable observation of vast regions on a daily basis.
