Helping cities monitor air quality

Earth Observation | Copernicus
Overview

The everyday impacts of poor air quality can be harmful and far-reaching. Accessible, reliable information is essential to raise public awareness and empower local governments to take effective action against pollution.

By using Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) data, the eLichens app delivers easy-to-understand, global air quality data for better decision making.

The challenge

Air quality in many urban areas remains a major health and economic concern. The eLichens team set out to develop a simpler, more effective way to integrate air quality data into local urban policies, private sector operations, and personal decision-making.

The solution

eLichens collects global air quality data by integrating a network of fixed and mobile sensors with a neural network-based model. It incorporates global forecasts and reanalysis from CAMS as a reliable baseline for background pollution. This data serves as a core component of the eLichens platform, which delivers real-time, accessible insights through a user-friendly website, mobile app, and API.

Results and impacts

Thanks to eLichens, cities have taken action. San Francisco, USA used its data to track the evolution of air quality during wildfire events in California. Grenoble, France, deployed the service to assess the impact of converting traffic lanes into bike lanes on city air quality, and to measure pollution exposure levels in various buildings. These are just two examples of how eLichens and CAMS data can be used to improve city life.
