Lake Shkodra: a new UNESCO Biosphere Reserve shared by Albania and Montenegro
Lake Shkodra, the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, has been designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This transboundary lake, shared by Albania and Montenegro, has significant ecological value, including as a bird migration corridor in Europe.
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 6 June 2026, shows Lake Shkodra and its surrounding wetlands, agricultural areas, and mountainous landscapes.
Copernicus supports the monitoring of protected areas and their dynamics, helping authorities and researchers assess environmental change and support sustainable management.
