Mayon Volcano, the Philippines
The Mayon Volcano, located in Albay province on Luzon Island in the Philippines, is one of the most active stratovolcanoes in the world. Rising 2,462 metres above sea level, it is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and a designated protected landscape under the Philippine National Integrated Protected Areas System. Its fertile slopes support diverse ecosystems, although its frequent eruptions pose a persistent threat to nearby communities.
One of the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites acquired this radar image on 2 March 2025, revealing the volcano's radial drainage patterns and lava channels in sharp detail.
Copernicus Sentinel satellites provide key open data for monitoring volcanoes worldwide, delivering information on eruptions and supporting early warning systems to help protect vulnerable populations.
