Dead shrimp along Mirbat Beach, Oman
In recent days, a mass stranding of dead red shrimp occurred along the coast of Mirbat, Oman, with reports attributing the event to sudden changes in ocean temperature, as crustaceans are highly sensitive to fluctuations in marine conditions.
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 22 April 2026, shows Mirbat Beach on the south-western coast of the sultanate, with sand appearing in pink and red due to the large quantity of red shrimp accumulated along the shoreline. Mirbat’s pale urban fabric contrasts with the arid brown hills inland and the turquoise shallows along the coast.
Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery supports coastal monitoring by helping authorities to map environmental phenomena, assess their impact, and provide timely information to the public.
