2 February is World Wetlands Day, dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness about the essential role wetlands play in preserving biodiversity and supporting environmental health.  An example of one of these important ecosystems is Secoveljske soline, a Ramsar Site in Slovenia containing tidal mudflats, salt pans, and saltmarsh. This site provides habitat to many species of breeding, wintering, and staging waterbirds, as well as invertebrates and plants which are otherwise rare in the country. The Secoveljske soline is visible in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 21 October 2024.

Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites enables the monitoring of important global ecosystems, including wetlands, helping to ensure that their wildlife and unique environmental characteristics are well preserved.
