Central and Eastern Europe continues to face severe flooding
Starting on 11 September 2024, Central and Eastern Europe has been battered by Storm Boris, which brought up to five times the average monthly rainfall for September in just a few days. Seven people died in Poland, seven in Romania, five in Austria and four in the Czech Republic, officials said on Wednesday, with several missing and hundreds of thousands ordered to evacuate as their homes were at risk of being submerged.
The flooded areas resulting from the overflow of the Oder River in Poland are visible in blue tones in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 18 September 2024. At its peak, the river water levels exceeded 7 metres in Brzeg, a city visible in the top left of the image.
In response to the floods, the On-Demand Mapping Team of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated to produce detailed maps of the affected areas.
