Spanning over 155,000 hectares, the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in northeastern Brazil is a unique natural wonder known for its vast, undulating sand dunes with crystal-clear lagoons, which cover over half of the park’s total area. The lagoons are created when rainwater collects in depressions between the dunes.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, the park is home to diverse wildlife, including migratory birds and native plants, and provides opportunities for eco-tourism, such as hiking, swimming, and exploring its scenic beauty.

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is visible in this image acquired on 15 September 2024 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites.
