Eastern Europe covered with snow
In mid-January 2026, heavy snowfall blanketed large parts of the European continent, with significant accumulation across Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova.
This false-colour image, acquired on 20 January 2026 by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites, shows snow-covered areas in white, vegetation in red, and water bodies in dark tones. The forested regions of the Carpathian and Apuseni Mountains stand out clearly, while the surrounding lowlands and plains, including areas around Bucharest and along the Danube River, show widespread snow cover.
The Copernicus Sentinel-3 mission provides systematic observations of Earth’s surface, including snow cover, land-surface temperature, and vegetation dynamics.
