First winter snowfalls in the southern hemisphere

This image, captured by one of Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 19 June, shows the snow-capped peaks of the Caleta Tortel Coastal Marine Protected Area in Chilean Patagonia. Tortel is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes characterised by glaciers, mountains, dense forests and fjords where meltwater, river water and seawater combine. The untouched nature and unique geographical features foster an incredible array of life. 

The region's commitment to conservation and sustainability ensures the preservation of its natural wonders. 

The Copernicus Sentinel-2 and Sentinel-3 satellites provide continuous, high-frequency monitoring over coastal areas around the world, which aids in creating data-driven strategies for the preservation of these unique regions.
