Intense rainfall replenishes wetlands in the Doñana National Park
Location: Spain
Credit: European Union, Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery

Between 1 and 31 March 2025, a series of intense rainfall events transformed the landscape of the Doñana marshes in southern Spain, as shown in these false-colour Copernicus Sentinel-2 images. The image on the right, acquired on 31 March, reveals widespread inundation across the Doñana National Park and its surrounding wetlands. Compared to the left panel from 1 March, the extent of inundated areas has significantly expanded, particularly in the central and western parts of the marsh system.

This large-scale inundation marks the most substantial hydrological recharge event in the park in over a decade. The return of water in this area is a vital step in restoring aquatic ecosystems, promoting the recovery of habitats and amphibian species which were severely impacted by prolonged droughts.

Open data from the Copernicus Sentinel satellites allows for continuous monitoring of global ecosystems, providing valuable insights into the dynamics which shape the habitats of countless species.
