The Moselle wine-growing region, Germany and Luxembourg
This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 23 October 2024, shows the Moselle wine region between Luxembourg and Germany.
The rolling hills on the Luxembourg side of the river are covered in terraced vineyards, which support the production of wines such as Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Auxerrois. The fertile soils and favourable climate make this area ideal for viticulture, with winemaking traditions dating back to Roman times. The Moselle River, forming a 42 km-long natural border between Luxembourg and Germany, plays a key role in shaping the region’s microclimate, ensuring high-quality grape production.
By informing yield forecasts and monitoring land use and crop conditions, the Copernicus Services and Sentinel satellites play a key role in supporting agriculture around the world.
