A massive dust storm originating from the Sahara Desert is engulfing the skies of the central Mediterranean Basin. The dust cloud has negatively impacted the air quality in affected countries and may cause restricted visibility, and mud rain, a mixture of rain and dust. Last week, a similar dust cloud enveloped the Iberian Peninsula.

In this image acquired by the Sentinel-3 satellite on 28 March 2024, the dust cloud can be seen hovering over Southern Italy, Malta, Greece, Libya, and Tunisia.

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) provides timely information related to air quality monitoring and forecasts, thereby supporting public health and safety measures.
