Eastern Spain is one of the most important habitats for nesting birds in Europe.

In 2023, the number of nesting pairs in the area reached an all-time high, totalling over 43,407 pairs of breeding waterbirds belonging to 48 different species. The most prevalent species were seagulls, glossy ibises, and flamingos. In the Albufera Natural Park, south of Valencia, more than 5,000 flamingo nests have been identified.

The Albufera Natural Park is visible in this image acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 5 March 2024.

Copernicus Sentinel satellite data, combined with data from the Copernicus in situ component, is key to monitoring habitats around the world and preserving their biodiversity.
