Saharan dust affects Italy
In mid-April 2025, a combination of meteorological phenomena began to affect Italy, as Sirocco winds transported large quantities of Saharan dust across the Mediterranean. This event led to hazy skies and a distinct yellowish tint over southern regions and the major islands, particularly Sicily.
This Copernicus Sentinel-3 image, acquired on 15 April 2025, shows Saharan dust suspended over the Mediterranean Sea and southern Italy.
The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) monitors and forecasts air quality on a global scale, assessing the concentration and dispersion of atmospheric pollutants and aerosols and informing actions to keep affected communities safer.
