São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and a key economic hub in Latin America. Located in the south-eastern region of the country, it serves as the capital of the state of São Paulo. The city has undergone rapid urban growth in recent decades, resulting in a vast metropolitan area characterised by high population density, extensive infrastructure, and diverse land use patterns. Its urban development presents important challenges and opportunities for environmental management, mobility, and sustainable planning.

On 13 August 2025, one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites acquired this false-colour image of central São Paulo. In the image, vegetation appears in shades of red. Built-up and impervious surfaces, such as roads and buildings, are shown in tones of grey and beige, clearly illustrating the extent of urban development across the metropolitan region. Various water bodies, as well as the Tietê River, which runs through the northern part of the image, are visible in dark blue to black tones.

Copernicus free and open data supports the monitoring of land use and urban expansion, providing key information for urban planning, infrastructure management, and environmental policy implementation in rapidly growing cities. The CopernicusLAC Panama Centre promotes the use of Copernicus data in Latin America & the Caribbean region.
