Relentless wildfires in Canada continue to produce vast amounts of smoke, leading to poor air quality conditions across the northern hemisphere. On 31 August, the smoke cloud reached Italy, Albania, and Greece after travelling over 10,000 kilometres, as visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-3 image acquired on the same day.

According to the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, the August 2023 fires in Canada played an important role in increasing the intensity and emissions of global fires in the same month. This resulted in August 2023 recording one of the highest emission  levels in the last six years.
