Storm Boris Triggers Severe Flooding in Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Storm Boris, the powerful weather system which swept across central and eastern Europe at the beginning of September 2024, has caused severe flooding in Italy, particularly in the Emilia-Romagna Region.

This area, already devastated by a major flood in May 2023, is once again facing the consequences of the intense rainfall which occurred between 18 and 19 September 2024. As a result, 2,500 people have been evacuated as a precaution, hundreds of homes flooded, and large areas of agricultural fields submerged.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 21 September 2024, shows a plume of sediment released into the Adriatic Sea, spreading along the coastline and colouring the water in swirling shades of brown and blue.

The Copernicus Emergency Management Service has been activated by Italian Civil Protection to assist in the response. More details are available here.
