Location: Sudochye Lake, Uzbekistan

This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 3 October 2023 shows the wetlands of the Sudochye Lake System, once part of the Aral Sea, in Uzbekistan. These lakes have been recently designated as Wetlands of International Importance protected under the Ramsar Convention because of their outstanding natural habitats.

The Ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty that provides a framework for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands and their resources. The Ramsar Sites List supports biodiversity by protecting the wetlands, maintaining the water resources, and providing a range of valuable ecosystem services.

Copernicus supports the protection and preservation of such unique ecosystems by delivering free and open high-resolution satellite imagery for monitoring and management purposes.
