The volcanic island born from the Home Reef eruption continues to grow

The Home Reef is an underwater volcano in the Tonga Archipelago. It erupted in September 2022, forming a volcanic island about 70 metres wide. Home Reef showed no signs of activity until September 2023, when a new eruptive phase started.

These images, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 10 September 2022, 24 September and 14 October 2023, respectively, show that the island has continued to grow during the latest eruption, reaching a width of approximately 300 metres.

Copernicus satellites facilitate the monitoring of volcanic activity around the world. More details are available here
