The Žuvinto, Žaltycio ir Amalvo pelkes wetland areas, Lithuania
This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 5 September 2024, shows the Žuvinto, Žaltycio ir Amalvo pelkes wetland areas, a Natura 2000 site in Lithuania. Spanning an area over 18,000 hectares, this site is home to 17 EU protected bird species.
The European Commission, through the LIFE Programme, is supporting the implementation of the National Water Sector Plan to restore water bodies across Lithuania, including the Žuvinto, Žaltycio ir Amalvo pelkes wetland areas. The project will improve water resource management, develop solutions to reduce surface water degradation, and transfer these solutions across Lithuania's river basin districts.
The Copernicus Sentinel satellites provide crucial data for facilitating accurate monitoring of global water bodies. This valuable information helps decision-makers and problem-solvers gain a deeper understanding of the challenges impacting communities and ecosystems, enabling more effective responses to environmental issues.
