Conduct climate risk assessments and develop effective adaptation strategies using CLIMADA’s Copernicus Seasonal Forecast Tools to process seasonal forecast datasets.

This new package makes seasonal forecast data from the Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS) seamlessly available for climate risk assessments. It offers comprehensive tools for downloading, processing, computing climate indices, and generating hazard objects based on seasonal forecast datasets, particularly Seasonal forecast daily and subdaily data on single levels. The package is tailored to integrate seamlessly with the CLIMADA (CLIMate ADAptation) platform, supporting climate risk assessment and the development of effective adaptation strategies.

The links below provide access to jupyter notebooks for an extended demonstration of the package's integration with CLIMADA's impact assessment framework, guiding users from raw forecasts to impact visualization. The Google Colab notebook can be run without installation of the underlying CLIMADA software.

Features:

  • Download seasonal forecast data from CDS
  • Process raw data into climate indices
  • Calculate a heat-related index
  • Create CLIMADA Hazard objects for further risk analysis
  • Visualize hazard data
  • Exposure Estimation
  • Vulnerability Definition
  • Analysis of Impacts
  • Visualization of Impact Results

The main achievements are:

  • Integrability: seamless coupling of climate data from the Copernicus Data Store to the CLIMADA risk modeling platform
  • Interdisciplinarity: Easy availability of seasonal forecasts to the risk modeling community
  • Accessibility: open source and open access code with executable tutorials without software installation
