Ahe Atoll, French Polynesia
Ahe Atoll, located in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia in the central Pacific Ocean, is part of a vast chain of coral atolls known for lagoon-based pearl cultivation. These remote, low-lying formations support a long-standing tradition of pearl farming, a key economic activity in the region where careful environmental management of water quality and oyster health sustains cultivation.
This Sentinel-2 image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 16 August 2025, reveals the atoll’s elongated ring enclosing a deep blue lagoon. Shallow reef flats appear in bright turquoise, while scattered lighter patches within the lagoon may indicate submerged coral heads or farming structures. A pearl farm is situated along the inner rim, where calm, sheltered waters favour cultivation.
Copernicus Sentinel-2 data support regular monitoring of lagoon water conditions, enabling sustainable aquaculture and coastal ecosystem management.
