Aquaculture in the Ebro Delta, Spain
Aquaculture is an important contributor to the global food supply, as well as one of the fastest growing food production sectors in the world. In Europe, the European Commission supports a sustainable aquaculture sector which ensures the supply of nutritious, healthy and tasty food with a low environmental and climate footprint.
This Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 26 September 2024 shows aquaculture rafts in the Bay of the Alfaques, near the town of La Ràpita, Spain.
Copernicus helps the monitoring of physical and biogeochemical characteristics of the global ocean and regional seas, making it a key resource for information on Europe’s aquaculture. The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) in particular plays an important role in providing products and information to support food security, monitoring of algal blooms, and a sustainable blue economy.
