The formation of sea ice in the Baltic Sea has been favoured by the cold temperatures recorded in Scandinavia at the beginning of 2024. The ice cover is the most extensive since 2011 and about 4 times larger than usual at this time of the year, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute.
The entire Bothnian Bay is covered with sea ice, as visible in this image of 4 January acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites.
The Copernicus Marine Service provides up-to-date open data on the extent of sea ice in polar regions.
