Since 1985, the European Commission has designated cities across Europe as Capitals of Culture in order to highlight the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe, increase European citizens’ sense of belonging to a common cultural area, and foster the contribution of culture to the development of cities. To become a Capital of Culture, proposals for each city are selected through a specific, multi-year process. Once designated, the experience typically raises the international profile of the city, revitalises its image and culture, and boosts tourism.

Chemnitz, Germany, has been selected as one of the European Capital Cities for 2025 for its vibrant culture and industrial heritage, which has contributed significantly to Germany’s overall industrial development. The city has been transformed by its history and social upheavals – most recently its renaming from Karl-Marx-Stadt and the end of the GDR – which have deeply influenced the culture and innovation in the region.

Chemnitz is visible in this Copernicus Sentinel-2 image acquired on 4 April 2024.

The Copernicus Sentinel satellites play an important role in monitoring culturally significant sites around the world. They deliver valuable data for land use and change assessments and provide key insights for better protecting these areas.
