Coastal adaptation measures in Tuvalu
Funafuti, an atoll of numerous islets in the west-central Pacific, is the capital of Tuvalu, the world’s fourth smallest country by land area. The country is vulnerable to challenges stemming from sea-level rise and coastal erosion. In this context, the Tuvalu Coastal Adaptation Project helps reduce coastal risks by supporting coastal adaptation measures. This has included the construction or reinforcement of artificial and natural buffers against flooding, respectively.
These Copernicus Sentinel-2 image, acquired on 20 February 2023 and 4 June 2025, show newly constructed buffers on Fongafale, Funafuti’s largest islet, which are designed to mitigate the effects of coastal erosion.
Copernicus free and open satellite data supports the monitoring of coastal erosion and the impacts of climate change, providing essential information for long-term adaptation strategies.
