The Parita Bay in Panama constitutes a key ecosystem for biodiversity and birdlife. It includes protected areas such as the Cenegón del Mangle Wildlife Refuge, Sarigua National Park, Peñón de la Honda Wildlife Refuge, and Las Macanas, one of the largest freshwater wetlands in the country.

The area has been left to deteriorate over time, resulting in a loss of ecological connectivity. In response, local authorities have launched initiatives, including the Governance and Green Infrastructure Plan to Mitigate Impacts in Parita Bay and the Wetland Conservation Plan for Parita Bay, to safeguard the region’s wetlands.

This image, acquired by one of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 2 March 2025, shows the Parita Bay and its wetland ecosystems.

Copernicus satellite imagery is key to monitoring coastal areas and wetlands, supporting the diverse species which call them home.
