Drought in southern Africa
In recent months, southern Africa has been affected by a severe drought, marked by extremely dry and warm conditions. Furthermore, the Zambezi River is flowing at very low levels for the season. These extreme conditions have impacted soil moisture and crops, amplifying ongoing humanitarian and environmental crises in the region.
These Copernicus Sentinel-2 images, acquired in March 2023 (top) and 2024 (bottom), show the changes caused by the drought along the borders of Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
The latest Copernicus Emergency Management Service‘s Global Drought Observatory (GDO) Analytical Report analyses the impact of the drought in southern Africa and the Zambezi Basin. More information is available here.
